Short answer: May is the most beginner-friendly month before summer, and the quietest the coast gets between the Easter fortnight and the summer holidays. The winter swell has tapered off, the schools are still in, and most mornings bring small, clean waves with light wind and glassy faces. Days around 25°C, nights around 15°C, water around 18 to 19°C, so a 3/2 wetsuit, included with the week. A week at The Pearl costs the same as in any other month: from €420 (dorm) for surf, from €510 (dorm) with daily yoga.
We run two surf houses, Blue Pearl and White Pearl, in Tamraght, a village just south of Taghazout, and May is the month we point to when someone wants a first week on a board before the summer holidays. Here is the honest version.
The three numbers
| May in Tamraght | |
|---|---|
| Air, daytime | about 25°C, nights about 15°C |
| Water | about 18 to 19°C, a 3/2 wetsuit, included with the week |
| Daylight | long evenings; the sun sets around eight |
Agadir coast averages, not a forecast for your week. In practice: T-shirt weather on the beach from breakfast to dinner, a light layer on the rooftop late in the evening, and water that has finally started to catch up with the air. The 4/3 of the winter stays in the cupboard; May is a 3/2, and it is included.
The waves
Winter is the season this coast is famous for, and it does not stop on a date. The big north-west swells taper through April, and by May the Atlantic has settled into a smaller, more regular rhythm. For a first week that is the better deal: fewer days spent watching from the beach, more days spent surfing.
Most mornings in May are small, clean and consistent. The wind is light early, the faces are glassy, and the sandy beach breaks below Tamraght give the long, forgiving rides a beginner needs to get the take-off right. Mornings are the session, as they are for most of the year here; whether the afternoon free surf is worth it depends on when the sea breeze comes in. The occasional late pulse still arrives, and when it does, the improvers in the group get a proper session out of it.
Two hours of coached surf plus two hours of supervised free surf a day, with the spot chosen each morning for the tide and the group. In May the question is rarely which spot is sheltered enough; it is which bank is cleanest.
Who May suits
Beginners first. If you have never stood on a board, May is a month we would happily choose for you: small waves mean more take-offs per session, water at 18 to 19°C in a 3/2 means the cold is not what ends your session, and quiet peaks mean nobody is in your way. Progress is a numbers game, and May stacks the numbers in your favour, with cooler air than July and a little more swell.
Improvers who want to sharpen technique on clean small waves do well in May too, and longboarders are in their element. If what you want is long point-break walls, pick the winter instead: December to February is when the points work most often, and March still has the tail of it.
The crowd: the quiet gap
May is the quietest the coast gets between the Easter fortnight and the summer holidays. The Easter crowd has gone home by mid-April, the summer school holidays have not started, and Moroccan families holiday on the coast in August. In between sits May: a relaxed village, room in the line-ups at the learner spots, and a long table that still fills every evening. Our houses run at the usual 12 guests a week, mixed levels, and about 70% of our guests arrive alone.
Long evenings on the roof
This is the part of May that people do not expect. The sun sets around eight, the rooftop holds the warmth of the day, and dinner at the long table runs late because nobody is cold. Sunset yoga on the rooftop, included in The Full Reset, happens in a proper golden hour rather than in the last light before dark. If you want the hour-by-hour picture of a week here, we have written it up at a day at The Pearl.
What a week costs in May
There is no seasonal pricing at The Pearl. The week costs the same in May as in January or October.
| Week | Dorm | Twin | Double | Private |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Surf Reset, surf only, 7 days | €420 | €450 | €510 | €550 |
| The Full Reset, surf + daily yoga (5 sessions in a 7-day week), 7 days | €510 | €550 | €610 | €630 |
Included: your room, three meals a day, two hours of coaching and two hours of supervised surf daily, boards and wetsuits, and airport pickup from Agadir. Not included: flights, insurance and personal spending. A €100 deposit per guest holds your spot, with a full refund up to 30 days before arrival, and free date changes 30 or more days out.
Shorter trips of 3 to 5 nights run from €225 (dorm) on The Quick Escape; on that package the airport transfer is an add-on at €30 one way.
April, May or summer?
April still carries the tail of the winter swell early in the month, the water is a degree cooler at about 17 to 18°C, and its first half holds the busiest fortnight of spring: Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, and the school holidays across Europe run roughly from 27 March to 11 April, so those weeks book early. The price does not change for Easter. May is a touch warmer, smaller and cleaner in the waves, and quieter in the village.
Summer is warmer still: 21 to 23°C water, boardshorts or a springsuit, the smallest waves of the year and the emptiest line-ups. The trade is a sea breeze that arrives around midday almost every day, so July and August are strictly morning months. May keeps most of the quiet and gives you a cooler afternoon and a little more wave.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to run from about 8 February to about 9 March, so it does not touch April or May; the village keeps its normal rhythm through the spring. For the big swell months, the same guide exists for October, November, January and Christmas and New Year.
What to pack for May
The 3/2 wetsuit and the board are on the house. Beyond that: swimwear for under the suit, sunscreen, because May sun at midday is strong, a hat, flip-flops, and one light layer for 15°C nights on the rooftop. The warm jacket of a winter week can stay at home.
Getting here
Pickup from Agadir Al Massira airport, about 40 minutes away, is included on the week packages. The week runs 7 days, 6 nights, and you can arrive on any day of the week; the retreat does not run on fixed start dates. The FAQ covers the rest.
Ready for May? The Surf Reset if the waves are the point, The Full Reset if you want daily yoga on the rooftop as well. Either way, pick your week on the booking page.
